Teaching Empathy

There's a problem in our society of perpetuating pain that I don't understand. In my own opinion, if you've ever been hurt, once you understand what that pain feels like, you should never want anyone else to ever feel that pain, and have a need to protect others from it.

Instead, people seem to want to share it, to make sure it's an experience others know. It's an "if I had to feel this, you should too." What happened to kindness? To empathy? Something needs to change.

It is my belief that this is something that can only be taught. Those of us who understand empathy must pass it on, when we raise our children and in our interactions with others. Hopefully we can find a way to break through the current societal norm and help others understand just how harmful it is to pass on the idea that experienced pain must be passed on to those around us.
