There is a current trend on social media to encourage others to "never give up" or believe they "can do anything they put their mind to".
Oh, boy. This one really gets me. Not everyone can just get up and start with one mile today and then do it again tomorrow. Not everyone can just reach for the sky and achieve their goals and dreams.
The people who can't, when we say so, are often told, "oh, we didn't mean you, and you knew that". I'm sorry, is a disabled person not part of "everyone "? Ableism is an ugly part of our world and it pops up in many different ways.
The reverse of the encouragement statement is the "you're so inspirational " or "you're so strong,". We're not here to inspire anyone either.
What we want is understanding and support, and maybe a little kindness, too. The same kindness that should be shared with everyone.
That's all anyone needs. A smile. A hug. A little appreciation.
Kindness.
